InTASC Standards
The Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) Model Core Teaching Standards outline what all teachers should know and be able to do. Below is how my practice aligns with each standard.
The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas.
My Reflection
Middle schoolers are changing fast—physically, socially, and emotionally. I use what I know about adolescent development to design lessons that are engaging, age-appropriate, and responsive to the wide range of needs in a middle school classroom.
The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments.
My Reflection
I differentiate instruction and provide accommodations so that all learners can access rigorous content and demonstrate what they know. I also work to understand each student's background and strengths.
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning.
My Reflection
I establish routines, norms, and physical spaces that promote safety, respect, and active engagement. I want students to feel comfortable taking academic risks and working together.
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline.
My Reflection
I strengthen my content knowledge in literacy, math, science, and social studies so I can teach with accuracy, make connections across subjects, and answer students' questions with confidence.
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners.
My Reflection
I design interdisciplinary lessons and real-world tasks that help middle schoolers see why what they are learning matters beyond the classroom.
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth.
My Reflection
I use formative and summative assessments, rubrics, and student self-assessments to guide instruction and help students take ownership of their progress.
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals.
My Reflection
I write clear objectives, align activities to standards, and plan for differentiation, engagement, and multiple entry points into the content.
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding.
My Reflection
I draw from a range of approaches—direct instruction, discussion, collaborative learning, visual supports, hands-on activities, and technology integration—to keep middle schoolers actively involved.
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate their practice.
My Reflection
I reflect on my teaching, seek mentor feedback, and participate in professional learning so I can keep improving and make ethical decisions in my practice.
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning.
My Reflection
I collaborate with colleagues, communicate with families, and contribute to a positive school community. I believe strong teaching happens through teamwork.
